Navigating the Fells: Want to enjoy days out on the fells knowing that should the cloud descend you will be able to navigate your way safely down, but not quite sure at the moment?  If so, then this is the course for you.  Every aspect of basic navigation covered from map orientation to ground shape, bearings and pacing.

Is it for me?  No previous navigation skills or experience are required and hopefully by the end of the day you will be able to confidently navigate and explore the upland fells anywhere in the UK!

What skills are covered? We start with the basics, giving you plenty of chance to become confident and familiar with the map and compass.  Navigational tools covered are:

• Orientation of the map
• Map symbols
• Scales
• Ground shape and contours 
• Measuring distances
• Taking bearings
• Calculating how long a particular walk will take
• Strategies for finding a feature (micro navigation)
• Identifying the mountains round about (macro navigation)
