'The Fellowship of hill and wind, and sunshine'

100 years ago The Great War finally ended.

100 years ago came the greatest of gifts.

Scafell Pike and 12 other Lakeland summits were given to the National Trust, for the nation, dedicated to those lost in World War I.  It was declared as the "world's greatest war memorial".

A dedication ceremony, described at the time as ‘as service in the clouds’ was held on top of Great Gable in 1924 and led by author, poet and renowned British mountaineer, Geoffrey Winthrop Young. Young continued to tackle famous peaks after being wounded and losing a leg when working as an ambulance driver at the Battle of San Gabriele in Italy.

He said, “Upon this mountain summit we are met today to dedicate this space of hills to freedom. Upon this rock are set the names of men – our brothers, and our comrades upon these cliffs – who held with us, that there is no freedom of the soil where the spirit of man is in bondage, and who surrendered their part in the fellowship of hill and wind, and sunshine, that the freedom of this land, the freedom of our spirit, should endure.”

Exactly 100 years to the day after Peace Day 1919 we will summit (over two amazing high level days) all of these gifted summits.

When is it all happening? Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st July 2019.

Who is leading the walks? Our qualified and experienced mountain leader will be navigating the walks and making sure we go the right way, even if we end up with our heads in the clouds!  We will make sure that the pace is right for everyone, that you are all safe, and of course having heaps of fun!

How much will it cost? The cost is only £55 for the weekend which includes hiring your Mountain Leader, and digital summit photos to prove to all of your friends that you did it!!

What about accommodation? We haven’t included this in the price as in our experience, people enjoy different things, but we can help you find what you want if you need a hand.  There are plenty of B&Bs, hotels, bunk-houses, and for the hardcore, campsites in and around the Keswick area.

Will I be fit enough? Yes!  If you are moderately active on a regular basis you will be more than capable of enjoying the weekend.  The walks will take between 6 and 7 hours a day and there are a few ups and downs which provide a challenge, but we don’t race round, we take regular breaks and no-one will be left behind!
